Intuition
If McKinsey's case feels like a guided tour, BCG's classic case feels more like a conversation where you're doing most of the driving. BCG leans candidate-led: you set the structure, decide what to analyze next, and walk the interviewer through your thinking, with them nudging rather than steering. The flip side of more freedom is more responsibility — you have to keep the case moving and prioritized on your own.
BCG also screens with a digital "online case" (the Casey chatbot in many markets), so part of your prep is getting comfortable solving in an interface, not just out loud.
Framework
What's distinctive about BCG:
- More candidate-led, conversational cases. You own the structure and the pace. Drive, prioritize, and narrate your logic — don't wait to be asked.
- The online case (Casey). A digital interactive case used to screen, mixing chart reading, math, and multiple-choice or open responses. Practice in a timed digital setting.
- Creativity and business sense valued. BCG appreciates well-reasoned, slightly creative thinking — show judgment, not just mechanics.
- Written/quant exercises can appear in some offices — be ready to interpret data tables.
Worked Example
In a BCG round, you might open a profitability case by laying out your own structure and then saying "I'd like to start with the cost side — can I see the cost breakdown?" — you choose the path. The interviewer mostly reacts and provides data. Separately, before live rounds, you complete the Casey online case: a timed sequence of questions on a business scenario with exhibits, where staying organized under the clock matters as much as the analysis. Same firm, two quite different testing surfaces.
Pitfalls
- Sitting back and waiting to be led — BCG expects you to drive.
- Neglecting the online case format and freezing at the unfamiliar digital interface.
- Being mechanical — BCG rewards a bit of insight and creativity alongside clean structure.
